Essential Reading: Editor's Pick: Gboard’s cursor mode makes editing notes easier

The report on Google’s development of a “cursor mode” for Gboard was made by a tipster, AssembleDebug. According to the report, the new mode is expected to enable users to activate a trackpad, thereby simulating a laptop experience on their phone. This moderately sized space will take the larger part of the space reserved for keys in Gboard.

In addition, the tipster explains that early code suggests users can activate this trackpad by “holding down the space bar.” Then, they can have full control of where they can slide their cursor to change the text. Presently, to change anything, you will have to either tap or slide your finger across your text.

Since this is the case, sometimes it happens that you can over-slide or under-slide. You will have to make micro-adjustments, whenever that happens. Obviously, this can alleviate some problems users encounter with the current method on their devices. However, there’s no official announcement at to when the feature will be available on devices.

Google has been working tirelessly to implement AI into every app under its fold. As a result, there has been no serious work on Gboard. Apart from the update for the digital keyboard that brought a smarter suggestion bar to the emoji kitchen, another key update for Gboard was real-time translation capabilities while the user types.

To activate the feature, navigate to Settings > System > Language & input > on-screen keyboard > toggle on Gboard. Users can also tap the translate button that appears above their keyboard and choose their languages.

It’s a very convenient update for Gboard, as users don’t have to leave their messaging app, go into Google Translate, then come back again.
